Basic Gun Safety:
We cannot emphasise enough how important gun safety is. The majority of accidents with guns are with guns that were thought to be 'empty'. We believe these few basic points on gun safety will prevent most accidents:
If you come to see me and you're new to shooting, please don't feel offended if I go through all of the above points to gun safety with you, as I believe you can never advocate gun safety enough.
Of course there is a lot more to gun safety than just these few points, but much depends on what type of shooting you are doing. However, the above points apply to any type of gun handling/shooting, be it target shooting with an air rifle in your garden, hunting with a rifle or clay/game shooting with a shotgun, etc.
If you wish to know more about gun safety for the type of shooting you wish to do, please contact me and I'll do my best to help.
- When picking a gun up (e.g. someone passing it to you, taking it out a gun of a gunslip or gun cabinet, etc.) always check it is empty (unloaded), even if you know you were the last person to handle that gun.
- When passing a gun to someone always make sure it is both empty and shown to be empty, e.g. 'breaking' the barrel on an over and under/side by side shotgun or break barrel airgun or pulling the bolt back on a bolt action rifle/semi auto shotgun, etc.
- Never point a gun with the barrel/chamber closed at anything you do not wish to shoot, even when you know the gun to be empty. This includes swinging the gun to put it away in a gunslip etc.
- Ear and eye protection should be used for all types of shotgun and rifle shooting. Eye protection is also a must when using air rifles and/or air pistols.
